Assessment of Audio Minutes from Committee of the Whole Meeting on 06/10/19

0:07:24 Start of Presentation and Discussion of Policy 253

Key Points:

0:14:03 – 0:14:29 and 0:15:00 – 0:15:13
Here Dr. Hollister acknowledges that ELANCO’s policy would not be sufficient for visiting teams that currently separate by biological sex and therefore require traditional male and female bathrooms; which acknowledges Policy 253 moves ELANCO AWAY from separation by biological sex.

0:17:43 – 0:18:34
Gary Buck confirms that non-renovated bathrooms (i.e. boys and girls’ rooms that are separated by biological sex) kept for visitors need to be locked during school hours because allowing students to use them would be a violation of the policy as it exists today!

How can the policy recognize and separate students by biological sex and at the same time prohibit it??

0:22:39 – 0:23:11
Hollister admits that indoctrinating students is easier than adults and even easier when kids start off with this as the norm in their lives, and believes this is a huge leap forward for children.

0:23:19 – 0:23:51
The plan is to get approval on 06/17/19 to give them best chance of meeting their projected timeline.

0:24:51 – 0:25:14
Hollister reminds the board that they have several opportunities to make decisions along the way, but declares that a vote to move forward on 06/17/19 would be a final vote on the policy itself. An admission that it’s not too late to stop and reconsider it before it’s official and would need to be uprooted and overturned as policy.

Other Points Worth Noting:

0:12:25 – 0:12:45
Hollister declares the Board has strongly favored a plan to renovate ALL bathrooms in district to a privacy model – when was this ever mentioned?

0:15:24 – 0:16:08
Hollister says they are ready to move forward (with intentions to begin construction by October and finish by January or February) indicating they still have no intention of listening to the community before they finalize and implement the policy. They also don’t make clear whether that is only for the high school locker rooms, or the district as a whole, which they now admit is the end goal.

0:15:27 – 0:15:29
Here Hollister admits he still needs to get permission to get bids

0:15:45 – 0:15:51
Hollister states the work will be phased; is he referring to more than just the high school locker rooms? If so, why are they not explicitly admitting that? Showing concepts for just the high school locker rooms implies it’s limited to the high school.

0:16:05 – 0:17:18
There is question about whether to continue to have urinals, which are uniquely male. Intend on having 11-12 single user bathroom facilities across the campus for students; why the need to go further??

There’s also an acknowledgement that there is intention to renovate the middle and elementary schools. They continue to show and focus on the high school, and only briefly mention that other schools will be affected too.

0:21:43 – 0:22:37
The plan is to produce 75-80 private bathroom facilities. Is this just for the locker room area? Why no admission of how many they will need to build across the district and estimate on the cost?

0:22:39 – 0:23:11
Hollister admits that indoctrinating students is easier than adults and even easier when kids start off with this as the norm in their lives, and believes this is a huge leap forward for children.

0:23:19 – 0:23:51
The plan is to get approval on 06/17/19 to give them best chance of meeting their projected timeline.
